OUR APPROACH
Evidence-based tools, tailored to you.
01 · Approach
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
Identifying, challenging, and restructuring negative thought patterns and automatic behaviors.
Cognitive Restructuring: Challenging automatic thoughts, organizing racing or fragmented thoughts, and using externalization exercises to separate the person from the problem.
Psychoeducation: Understanding trauma responses, the mechanics of the "fight, flight, or freeze" states, and mapping trauma-related body sensations to cognitive triggers.
02 · Approach
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) & Mindfulness-Based Interventions
Developing emotion regulation, distress tolerance, interpersonal effectiveness, and present-moment awareness.
Somatic Regulation: Using body scanning, progressive muscle relaxation (PMR), and cultivating interoception (the internal sense of the body's physical state).
Narrative Structuring: Utilizing Motivational Interviewing and narrative techniques to explore personal history, process trauma responses, and build insight into recurring life patterns.
03 · Real-World Behavioral Scales
Somatic Regulation & Psychodynamic Therapy
Bridging body awareness with deeper insight into unconscious patterns, trauma responses, and defense mechanisms.
Somatic Regulation: Using body scanning, progressive muscle relaxation (PMR), and cultivating interoception (the internal sense of the body's physical state).
Narrative Structuring:Utilizing Motivational Interviewing and narrative techniques to explore personal history, process trauma responses, and build insight into recurring life patterns.
We also have two incredible therapy dogs, Sammy and Tucker, who can help alleviate fear and quell anxiety as you uncover painful memories.
Whatever path you take, our clinical expertise will help you identify the patterns that no longer serve you, allowing you to define yourself by your resilience rather than by your past experiences.
"Trauma is not what happens to you. Trauma is what happens inside you as a result of what happens to you."
— Dr. Gabor Maté

In their own words.
Dr. Heafey has had an incredible positive impact on me. He was able to very quickly identify underlying causes for issues that my previous therapists had all missed, and we either focused on them in our sessions or he gave me referrals where appropriate. I've grown so much and function so much better thanks to all the effort he puts in. He cares deeply about his patients and will always go the extra mile for them.

Dr. Heafey and his team at Unfold Psychology is amazing. I have been working with Dr Heafey for 3 years now and it's completely changed the way I see myself and attitude towards life. The Executive functioning, run by Talia Prince was life changing. I was horrible at following through, staying motivated and life management. I noticed great change just after 6 months of the EF program. Talia is incredible and works harder for you than anyone has before. Highly recommend Unfold and the EF program for anyone struggling with life management.

Best therapist I've known. Helped me through my couple years of college and dealing with PTSD, relationships and anxiety. I am so grateful to know him and to have had him there for my care. He feels so safe and creates such a safe space for you to explore and express your emotions.

Common Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does therapy cost?
Session fees range from $225–$550 depending on the service. We are an out-of-network practice, which means we don’t bill insurance companies directly. Instead, we provide superbills to make that process easy, and most of our clients receive partial reimbursement through their insurance.
Do you accept insurance?
We are out-of-network with all insurance plans. Many of our clients use out-of-network benefits to get reimbursed for a significant portion of our fees. In 2025, our insurance specialist helped clients recover over $54,000 in insurance reimbursements — and that doesn’t include superbill submissions. We provide detailed superbills and can help you understand your benefits before you start.
Can I contact my therapist between sessions?
Yes! This is one of the many things that makes our practice different from traditional models. Even when your therapy visits end, the door remains open — you are always encouraged to give your clinician a call or a text. You will have direct access to your therapist, with calls returned within two hours. We are here for you.
How long will I be in therapy?
It varies. Some clients come for a specific issue and finish in a few months; others stay longer for ongoing support. We’ll talk about your goals early on and revisit them together as things shift.
Do you offer online therapy?
Yes — we offer private, secure telehealth sessions to residents anywhere in California, in addition to in-person sessions at our four Bay Area locations.
