OVERVIEW

A critical time for mental health support.

The teen years bring significant physical, emotional, and social changes, making them a critical time for mental health support. By addressing emotional regulation, self-esteem, and social skills, our adolescent therapy not only helps teens navigate their current challenges but also lays a foundation for healthier adult lives. Our goal is to empower adolescents with the tools they need to thrive both emotionally and socially, ensuring a smoother transition into adulthood.

WHAT WE FOCUS ON

More than "just a phase."

When added stressors like social media anxiety, identity exploration, or clinical depression enter the picture, the teen years can become overwhelming. Our specialized adolescent therapy meets teens exactly where they are — offering tools to manage what lies beneath the surface.

ADHD

We offer personalized, evidence-based assessments and counseling to help teens manage symptoms, improve executive functioning, and thrive academically and socially.

Anxiety

We help teenagers navigate the pressures of modern life — from academic stress to social anxiety — using holistic techniques that bridge the mind-body connection.

Depression

Depression can be a challenging and overwhelming experience. Our therapists provide a judgment-free space for teens to explore their emotions and build the resilience needed to embrace a hopeful future.

Other specializations: We are also skilled in helping teens overcome bipolar disorder, OCD, panic disorder, and behavioral and developmental issues.

OUR APPROACH

Developmentally appropriate tools for real-world challenges.

We focus on creating a safe and supportive environment where adolescents can freely explore their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. We employ a variety of therapeutic techniques that resonate with teens:

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

To identify and change negative thought patterns.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)

For emotion regulation and interpersonal effectiveness.

Experiential Therapy

Shifting the focus from talking to doing with role-playing, guided imagery, or animal-assisted therapy.

These tools help young people develop essential life skills, emotional resilience, and effective coping strategies to manage stressors like academic pressures, peer relationships, and identity issues. We also believe working with parents helps improve communication and resolve conflicts within the home.

"The brain remodels dramatically during the teenage years. Emotional input rings like a gong for teenagers and a chime for everyone else.."

In their own words.

What families say.

Dr. Heafey has had an incredible positive impact on me. He was able to very quickly identify underlying causes for issues that my previous therapists had all missed, and we either focused on them in our sessions or he gave me referrals where appropriate. I've grown so much and function so much better thanks to all the effort he puts in. He cares deeply about his patients and will always go the extra mile for them.

Dr. Heafey and his team at Unfold Psychology is amazing. I have been working with Dr Heafey for 3 years now and it's completely changed the way I see myself and attitude towards life. The Executive functioning, run by Talia Prince was life changing. I was horrible at following through, staying motivated and life management. I noticed great change just after 6 months of the EF program. Talia is incredible and works harder for you than anyone has before. Highly recommend Unfold and the EF program for anyone struggling with life management.

Best therapist I've known. Helped me through my couple years of college and dealing with PTSD, relationships and anxiety. I am so grateful to know him and to have had him there for my care. He feels so safe and creates such a safe space for you to explore and express your emotions.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Why don’t you accept all insurance?

Insurance companies limit the degree and speed of care you can receive, which is why we do not accept every type of insurance. Our priority is to get our clients and their families the help they need, when they need it. We find that providers who take insurance typically have very long waitlists or don’t have openings for new clients. Additionally, the majority of insurance companies require a mental health diagnosis before they extend coverage, and sometimes insurance companies have varying caps on the coverage they provide for specific disorders (depression vs. anxiety, etc.).

How much does therapy cost?

Session fees range from $225–$550 depending on the service. We are an out-of-network practice, which means we don’t bill insurance companies directly. Instead, we provide superbills to make that process easy, and most of our clients receive partial reimbursement through their insurance.

Do you offer online therapy for teens?

Yes — we offer private, secure telehealth sessions to residents anywhere in California. Many teens find telehealth more accessible, especially those with busy school and activity schedules.

How involved will I be in my teen’s therapy?

Parent involvement varies by age and by the goals of therapy. Older teens often need more privacy to build trust with their therapist, while younger teens may benefit from more parent partnership. We’ll discuss this openly at the outset and revisit as therapy progresses.

How is teen therapy different from adult therapy?

Adolescents are navigating unique developmental territory — identity formation, peer dynamics, brain remodeling, and shifting family roles. Our teen therapy uses developmentally-attuned tools like CBT, DBT, and experiential techniques that resonate with teens, in a safe environment where they can explore what they’re going through without judgment.
