OVERVIEW
A comprehensive look at cognitive functioning.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), one in ten American children is affected by Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).
ADHD is a developmental and neurological condition that typically appears during early childhood, with symptoms presenting before age 12. However, the way it shows up changes dramatically as a child matures — which is why a comprehensive neuropsychological assessment matters.
AGE MATTERS
How ADHD shows up changes as a child matures
Stage 01
Young Children
Often present with hyperactivity — seeming to be "on the go" or "driven by a motor." They may act impulsively, talk over others, or struggle to filter out classroom distractions.
Stage 02
Older Children
Are more likely to struggle with quiet inattention rather than physical hyperactivity — often appearing to be "in their own world" or drifting during tasks. Careless mistakes, forgetfulness, and difficulty keeping track of belongings are common. Emotional outbursts and difficulty transitioning between activities may also appear at this stage.
Stage 03
Adolescents & Adults
Frequently experience challenges with executive functioning — the higher-level cognitive skills needed for planning, organizing, and managing time. Chronic disorganization, missed deadlines, and difficulty prioritizing are hallmarks at this stage.
"ADHD is not a deficit of attention, but rather an abundance of it — misdirected and unfocused. With the right guidance, this abundance can be channeled into extraordinary creativity and success."
— Dr. Edward Hallowell
WHY NEUROPSYCHOLOGICAL
Why a neuropsychological assessment matters
When a client or parent reports struggles with attention, we approach our evaluations with immense care. Inattention is a behavioral symptom that can be triggered by many different underlying factors — from anxiety to sleep disturbances or mild, undetectable seizure activity.
While a basic psychological screening can identify that a challenge exists, it lacks the specificity to pinpoint the exact root cause. A comprehensive neuropsychological assessment evaluates all cognitive domains:
- Intellectual abilities & academic achievement
- Attention and working memory
- Executive functioning (planning and organizing)
- Language and visual-spatial skills
- Emotional and personality development

RULING OUT
Uncovering co-existing conditions
Because ADHD impacts how a brain processes the world, it can take a heavy toll on self-confidence, frequently leading to secondary challenges. For many clients, learning that their lifelong struggles stem from natural brain development — rather than a personal flaw — is entirely life-changing.
An ADHD diagnosis does not rule out other mental health conditions. We carefully evaluate and rule out co-occurring or mimicking issues, including:
Anxiety & Depression
Excessive worry, fatigue, or feelings of hopelessness that can either coexist with ADHD or be triggered by the frustration of untreated symptoms.
Learning Differences
Challenges with reading, writing, or math where a student's standardized test scores don't reflect their true intelligence.
Sensory & Sleep Issues
Sensory integration problems or sleep disturbances that actively disrupt daytime focus.
Substance Use
The natural impulsivity associated with ADHD can sometimes lead to coping through alcohol or other substances.

Common Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Can adults be assessed for ADHD?
Yes. While ADHD typically presents before age 12, many adults are only diagnosed later in life. In adolescents and adults, ADHD often shows up as executive-functioning challenges — trouble planning, organizing, and managing time — rather than the classic hyperactivity seen in young children.
How long does an ADHD assessment take to complete?
Testing itself is typically completed across multiple sessions. Report turnaround depends on the option you choose: Normal (6–8 weeks), Expedited (4–6 weeks), Rush (3–5 weeks), or Tornado (2–3 weeks).
How much does an ADHD assessment cost?
Comprehensive psychological assessments range from $3,750 to $15,000, depending on the scope, complexity, and specific tools used. Final pricing is determined after the initial consultation. We recommend contacting us for a quote based on your needs.
What happens after an ADHD assessment?
Depending on the findings, next steps may include ongoing ADHD Treatment, COGMED Brain Training, executive functioning coaching, or educational accommodations. The detailed report includes specific recommendations tailored to you or your child.
Who conducts the ADHD assessment?
ADHD assessments at Unfold Psychology are conducted by Dr. Heafey and Dr. Hazzard, both licensed clinical psychologists with expertise in comprehensive neuropsychological testing.
